EHS Specialist

Looking for the opportunity to share your EHS knowledge to help others work in a safer environment?  Our client has an urgent need for a solid EHS Specialist to work M-F (weekends and on-call as needed). 
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Review safety issues and incidents, working with management and employees to develop plans for resolution.
  • Schedule and conduct EHS compliance inspections and audits, perform documentation and provide corrective action response recommendations and tracking.
  • Work with hazardous and non-hazardous waste identification, containerization, consolidation, labeling, accumulation and shipment for disposal.
  • Develop, implement and review protocols for paint usage tracking in paint booth to ensure compliance with applicable Iowa DNR.
  • Collect, document and record site storm water samples.
  • Support workers compensation case coordination and participate in incident investigations.
  • Use working knowledge of personal, industrial & occupational safety to manage safety programs such as Life Safety Code, Forklift Operations, Hoist & Crane Operations, Lifting Equipment programs, Job Safety Analysis, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control, Respiratory Protection, PPE Program, Hazard Communication and other OSHA required programs.
  • Promote safety awareness; schedule and perform hazard awareness training.
  • Support and participate in Monthly Safety Meetings through meeting attendance, content creation and presentation.
  • Participate in Safety Committee meetings through meeting attendance, inspection team leadership and findings documentation.
  • Conduct new hire and temporary employee EHS training.
  • Gather pertinent information, statistics and figures to be presented in the form of EHS metrics.
  • Maintain safety files and keep SDS spreadsheet up-to-date; keep inventory of safety forms, supplies, materials and equipment for program use.
  • Conduct production, shop and maintenance floor audits, submitting maintenance requests as required ensuring corrective actions.
  • Comply with all environmental, health and safety Federal, State, Local regulations and company policies.
  • Collect data and assist in regulatory reporting.
  • Perform Risk Assessments with all departments to determine potential hazards of new processes and projects (capital projects and others) and ensure all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations, along with industry standards, (ANSI, NFPA, ACGIH) are followed.
  • Determine potential health effects of any new chemical under consideration for use and ensure compliance with chemical, noise and monitoring programs.
  • Develop and implement JSA's and training programs in use of safety equipment.
  • Participate in emergency response functions such as material release First Responders and First Aid teams.
  • Develop and implement emergency evacuation plans and procedures.
  • Assist Director of EHS in program development and perform other duties as assigned.

 

  • Must have AS or BS degree in Occupational Safety or Environmental Health & Safety or equivalent experience.
  • Must have valid driver's license and be insurable under company's policy.
  • Experience managing compliance of EHS (personal, industrial & occupational) regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Must be detail orientated with proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, follow-up and follow-through.
  • Professional, efficient and well-developed oral and written communication skills in English required. Spanish speaking and writing ability is a plus.
  • Proficient with computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Must have the ability to utilize computer technology to research online, prepare reports, access data and maintain records.
  • Must have current knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws and regulation relating to environmental, health and safety.
  • Creative problem solving to recognize and analyze needs and propose solutions to effectively address them.
